The Record Of American Democracy (ROAD)

The Record Of American Democracy (ROAD) data includes election returns; socioeconomic summaries; and demographic measures of the American public at unusually low levels of geographic aggregation. The NSF-supported ROAD project covers every state in the country from 1984 through 1990 (including some off-year elections). One collection of data sets includes every election at and above State House; along with party registration and other variables; in each state for the roughly 170;000 precincts nationwide (about 60 times the number of counties). Another collection has added to these (roughly 30-40) political variables an additional 3;725 variables merged from the 1990 U.S. Census for 47;327 aggregate units (about 15 times the number of counties) about the size one or more cities or towns. These units completely tile the U.S. landmass. The collection also includes geographic boundary files so users can easily draw maps with these data.

Grid-Arendal's Online Gis And Map Database

As a specific follow-up to the recommendations of the 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development; the Government of Norway and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established an environmental information centre in Arendal; Norway. Set up as a foundation under Norwegian legislation; the centre was linked to the world-wide UNEP programme termed Global Resource Information Database and was therefore called a GRID centre. GRID-Arendal was opened by the Norwegian Prime Minister on August 22; 1989. In the geographic projection; coordinates are provied in decimal degrees of latitude and longitude. This is useful if other geographic data from other sources will be added to these covers. Yet "geographic projections" is considered "unprojected"; which means that distances or area can not be used; as their computed values are not meaningful. GIS datasets may be freely used as long as appropriate credit is given to GRID-Arendal and the original data source. Available file compression types are: tar+gz (typically suitable for unix systems); or zip (normally suitable for Windows PCs). Trade, Production and Bilateral Protection Database

"This dataset provides data used in Mayer and Zignago (2005); which involves trade and production figures in a compatible industry classification for developed and developing countries. Those come from the Trade and Production 1976-1999 database made available by Alessandro Nicita and Marcelo Olarreaga at the World Bank; which compiles this data for 67 developing and developed countries at the ISIC rev2 3-digit industry level over the period 1976-1999. The original data comes principally from United Nations sources; the COMTRADE database for trade and UNIDO industrial statistics for production. The World Bank files have a lot of missing values for production figures in recent years. We largely extended the database on this aspect using more recent versions of the UNIDO CD-ROM together with OECD STAN data for OECD members. We also completed the trade data; using the CEPII database of international trade (BACI). The resulting database has 26 ISIC 3-digit industries over the 1976-2001 period for a large number of countries." - From the CEPII website description

Many of the choices adolescents make staying in school or dropping out; getting married or staying single; attending college or getting a job are more consequential later on than during adolescence. As adolescents move toward adulthood; the decisions they made begin to influence the outcomes they experience. To better understand this transition; original Wave I respondents were re-interviewed between August 2001 and April 2002. Wave III respondents were between 18 and 26 years of age; 4;882 respondents were reinterviewed. The research emphasis in Wave III was on the multiple domains of young adult life that individuals enter during the transition to adulthood; and their well-being in these domains: labor market; higher education; relationships; parenting; community involvement. Data collected at Wave III allow for diverse analyses across a spectrum of social; economic; and health-related outcomes. The restriction agreement is available at ." RAND Center for Population Health and Health Disparities (CPHHD) Data Core Series: Street Connectivity, 1990, 2000

The RAND Center for Population Health and Health Disparities (CPHHD) Data Core Series is composed of a wide selection of analytical measures, encompassing a variety of domains, all derived from a number of disparate data sources. The CPHHD Data Core's central focus is on geographic measures for census tracts, counties, and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) from two distinct geo-reference points, 1990 and 2000. In this collection, Street Connectivity, two datasets are available: one for the 1990 Census and another for the 2000 Census. These files contain one record per census tract and have several measures associated with the street network data based on the TIGER/Line files available for each Census. These measures have been computed using ArcGIS software. At the tract level, the type of measures included are: number of street segments and intersections, average and median block length and block size, ratios of the actual number of complete loops to the maximum number of possible loops given the number of intersections, and ratios of the actual number of street segments to the maximum possible given the number of intersections.

The Regional Manifestos Project

The Regional Manifestos Project is an ambitious, long-term project, conceived to serve as a comparative cross-country endeavour. The funding obtained so far has allowed us to complete two waves of regional elections in Spain, 2004-2007* and 2008-2011 and we have already started the third one (2012-2016). Moreover, we have recently added the British case (Scotland and Wales). The total number of cases in the dataset is 58 (see the list below). The dataset will be periodically updated in order to add new manifestos. "

Medicare Provider Charge Data

As part of the Obama administration’s work to make our health care system more affordable and accountable, data are being released that show significant variation across the country and within communities in what hospitals charge for common inpatient services.  The data provided here include hospital-specific charges for the more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals that receive Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) payments for the top 100 most frequently billed discharges, paid under Medicare based on a rate per discharge using the Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011. These DRGs represent almost 7 million discharges or 60 percent of total Medicare IPPS discharges.

Public Health Law Research Distracted Driving Laws Dataset, 2000-2011

This project compiled state and District of Columbia laws regulating the use of mobile communication devices (MCD) by individuals operating motor vehicles and coded some of the laws' features in a data file. The data file contains information about prohibitions against talking or texting on a MCD for different groups of drivers.  For each of these groups, the coded features include the date each provision against talking or texting on a MCD went into effect, whether there is hands-free exception to the prohibition, whether there is a primary or secondary method of enforcement, and the minimum and maximum fines for the first, second, and third violations. The data file is structured so that each record reflects the coded features of relevant law at a given month. Thus, every state and the District of Columbia has 144 records in the file, one for each month from January 2000 to December 2011.

Database on Ideology, Money in Politics, and Elections (DIME)

The Database on Ideology, Money in Politics, and Elections (DIME) is intended as a general resource for the study of campaign finance and ideology in American politics. The database was developed as part of the project on Ideology in the Political Marketplace, which is an on-going effort to conduct a comprehensive ideological mapping of political elites, interest groups, and donors using the common-space CFscore scaling methodology (Bonica 2013). Constructing the database required a large-scale effort to compile, clean, and process data on contribution records, candidate characteristics, and election outcomes from various sources. The resulting database contains over 100 million political contributions made by individuals and organizations to local, state, and federal elections spanning a period from 1979 to 2012. A corresponding database of candidates and committees provides additional information on state and federal elections.

The Comparative Immigrant Entrepreneurship Project (CIEP)

The CIEP survey of over 1,200 Colombian, Dominican, and Salvadoran family heads is the first to explicitly measure the extent of economic, political, and socio-cultural transnationalism among immigrants and to develop predictive models of these activities. The study was designed to examine the prevalence of transnational entrepreneurship in immigrant communities and to provide basic information about its empirical contours and correlates.  The research design targeted newer Latin American immigrant nationalities in their primary areas of residential concentration in the U.S.  and includes questions concerning the characteristics and regularity of the ties they maintain with their countries of origin.  Specifically, the coverage includes Colombians in Queens, NY;  Dominicans in Washington Heights (Upper Manhattan) and Providence, RI; and Salvadorans in the Washington DC metro area (the Adams Morgan section of DC and Alexandria, Virginia) and Los Angeles (Pico Union).

Cuban and Mexican Immigrants in the U.S. (CMI)

The aim of this longitudinal study, based on data on Cuban and Mexican immigrants to the USA collected in 1973-74, was to map the process of immigrant adaptation and incorporation into the labour market. The survey data contained in this archive was gathered over a period beginning in 1973-74 and ending in 1979. This data is the primary source for the publication Latin Journey: Cuban and Mexican Immigrants in the United States (Portes and Bach 1985). The longitudinal character of the study also allowed the researchers to untangle the sequence of events leading to specific results and to compare the effects of what immigrants bring with them with those stemming from the social and economic context that receives them.

Mexican Migration Project

The Mexican Migration Project (MMP) was created in 1982 by an interdisciplinary team of researchers to further our understanding of the complex process of Mexican migration to the United States. The project is a binational research effort co-directed by Jorge Durand, professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Guadalajara (Mexico), and Douglas S. Massey, professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University (US). Since its inception, the MMP's main focus has been to gather social as well as economic information on Mexican-US migration. The data collected has been compiled in a comprehensive database that is available to the public free of charge for research and educational purposes through this web-site. The MMP is a unique source of data that enables researchers to track patterns and processes of contemporary Mexican immigration to the United States. The project is a multi-disciplinary research effort that generates public use data on the characteristics and behavior of Mexican migrants.

The Project on Ethnicity and Race in Latin America

Latin America is known for its racial and ethnic diversity.  Based on available estimates, about 45 million of the 500 million people in Latin America are indigenous and about 90 million (100 million if we include Haiti) are afro-descendants. This compares to about 40 million U.S. African Americans and 2.5 million American Indians. Although interest in ethnicity and race in Latin America has increased tremendously in the past two decades, our knowledge of the current situation there is scant, especially when compared to the United States. PERLA’s goal is to empirically examine numerous dimensions of race and ethnicity across Latin America. The project is directed by Edward Telles, Professor of Sociology at Princeton University and Associate of the Office of Population Research and is being conducted in collaboration with researchers from Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States.

World Input-Output Database

Production processes increasingly fragment across borders. This fundamentally alters the nature of international trade with deep consequences for the location of production. The World Input-Output Database (WIOD) is the first public database that contains new information on these trends and provides the opportunity to analyse the consequences of fragmentation, for example for shifting patterns in demand for skills in labour markets, or for local emissions of air pollutants. The World Input-Output Database (WIOD) provides time-series of world input-output tables for forty countries worldwide and a model for the rest-of-the-world, covering the period from 1995 to 2011. These tables have been constructed in a clear conceptual framework on the basis of officially published input-output tables in conjunction with national accounts and international trade statistics. In addition, the WIOD provides data on labour and capital inputs and pollution indicators at the industry level that can be used in conjunction enlarging the scope of possible applications.

2012 NORC Presidential Election Study

The 2012 NORC Election Study was designed to measure public opinion about important issues the country faces – economic recovery, health care costs, and extreme partisanship. Conducted in the fourth year of a slow and unsteady economic recovery, this survey intends to determine, among other things, whether or not voters hold the incumbent responsible for the condition of the economy; if it matters that the recession began during a previous administration; and does the electorate account for whether the opposition cooperated with the president or confronted him? The survey consists of two rounds of data collection. The first round went into the field before the November 2012 presidential election. The second round examines post-election attitudes and perceptions. The objective survey attempts to provide information that will help inform our national discussion around how to bridge the partisan divide and solve our most pressing problems.

Political Instability Task Force Worldwide Atrocities Dataset

The Political Instability Task Force (PITF) Worldwide Atrocities Dataset is a global dataset that describes, in quantitative terms, the deliberate killing of non-combatant civilians in the context of a wider political conflict. This data collection project, which is still ongoing, is intended to advance efforts to understand and anticipate atrocities, i.e., the deliberate use of lethal violence against non-combatant civilians by actors engaged in a wider political or military conflict. The practical objective of this project is to create a dataset representing a reasonably systematic sample of atrocities occurring worldwide in recent decades in order to: (1) enable the development of statistical models that might be used to identify countries vulnerable to the occurrence of atrocities or, if atrocities are already occurring, to an escalation in their rate or intensity; and (2) create a descriptive record that might be used by researchers with an interest in particular countries or conflicts. The effective date of data in this dataset is 1 January 1995 to the present date. Data are updated monthly.

Data are available online for all interested users, free of charge. The repository provides regional level data for the territory of the current Russian Federation over the last two centuries (1800-2000), standardised to facilitate access and to enable comparative research over time and across space. Data are gathered on a standard programme, along seven principal lines of inquiry (population, labour, industrial output, agricultural output, services, capital, land) and for five cross-sections of Russian history (1795, 1858, 1897, 1959, 2002).
